The Effects of Vitamin D and Microfracture Surgery Technique on Calcium and Phosphorus: A Pilot Study

INTRODUCTION: The most important effects of vitamin D is on calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) metabolism, and on bone health, which also helps in regulating the ratio of Ca and P. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin D and minor surgical stress on especially Ca and P levels in liver, kidney and serum in 24 New Zealand rabbits with cartilage defects.
METHODS: The experimental groups were MFS (only microfracture surgery), Vit D (only oral vitamin D supplementation) and MFS + Vit D (both microfracture surgery and oral vitamin D supplementation). Serum, liver and kidney levels of Ca and P were measured via spectrophotometric method.
RESULTS: Kidney Ca/P ratio was lower and serum Ca/P ratio was higher in MFS + Vit D than control. Serum P levels showed a significant decrease in MFS and MFS + Vit D when compared with control.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: As we could reach the literature, this is a novel study related with the microfracture surgery and the relationship between Ca and P. As a result, we concluded that Ca/P ratio might indicate an ideal balance between them as well as adequacy of vitamin D.
