Comparison of the SST ™ II with RST tubes for biochemistry parameters in emergency laboratory

INTRODUCTION: Upon admittance to our hospital emergency department we aim to provide fast and accurate test results. With the permission of the patients who had been admitted to our emergency department requiring laboratory test results, we collected their blood samples in two different tubes SST (Standard Serum Tube) and RST (Rapid Serum Tube) and then compared the results.
METHODS: : Blood samples have been collected from 75 adult patients by routine phlebotomy into BD (Becton Dickinson) RST and BD SST™ II Advance tubes. Both tubes are centrifuged according the instructions for obtaining serum, and then each tube was tested for alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, amylase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, lipase, total creatinine kinase, creatinine kinase-MB enzyme activities and albumin, glucose, calcium, chloride, creatinine, potassium, sodium, total and direct bilirubin, total protein, urea levels on an Abbott Architect® 16000 with biochemical methods. Statistical calculations were performed with NCSS 2007 program for Windows.
RESULTS: When compared with the BD SST™ II Advance tube samples results, BD RST samples results were clinically equivalent or clinically acceptable. The results were evaluated within a 95% confidence interval. Statistical significance level was established at p<0.05.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: BD RSTs do not require a waiting period for clotting, thereby decreasing turn around time (TAT) by nearly 30 min. This can lead to increased laboratory efficiency and improved patient management in Emergency Departments.
